Description of problem Service not available - unexpected
Cause Incorrect connection of new network switch in Gengras forced automatic shutdown of key network link between academic and residential sides of the network.
Solution Disconnected problematic switch. Rebooted 6509 router to restore link.
Discussion This outage was caused by human error. Future switch additions will be more carefully checked before implementation. The network should have recovered immediately upon disconnedting the offending switch, without having to reboot the router, however, there appears to be a bug in Cisco IOS causing the network links to fail to come back up on their own.
